Lisburn City Council Purchases Sixteen Preformed Modular Graves

Lisburn City Council has recently purchased sixteen preformed modular graves in order to assess the viability of this type of system for more extensive use in the Council’s cemeteries.

Each modular unit is installed in the ground and can accommodate four caskets or up to 20 urns for cremated remains.

The Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Andrew Ewing, speaking about the new system, said: “The Council has purchased these modular grave units to provide increased capacity at its existing cemetery; as these systems guarantee four burials per grave in comparison to the current two and can potentially be deployed to bring sloping ground into use.

“The modular grave systems are sustainable and comprised of recyclable products. Family members can choose from one of four different maintenance free coverings i.e. synthetic grass, pebbles, resin bonded stone finish or marble.

“Lisburn City Council is the first in the United Kingdom to utilise this type of product and it will provide advice and assistance to other local authorities considering how to increase the capacity of their cemeteries. These modular grave units will allow the Council to extend the utilisation of its cemeteries; and therefore will assist in its provision of an essential service to its ratepayers,” he concluded.
